Statement on Reconnecting

The Reconnecting series is a body of work in process. It explores the human condition of reconnecting mind, body, and spirit.

After an unexpected life interruption, which required significant focus of thought, determination of spirit, and help from family and friends, I regained the physical ability to stretch, tear, and paint my canvases.

The process of creating these tactile works revealed a new paradigm about reconnecting – it must happen in the present.

In the visual textures of dried acrylic paint, canvas bows, torn edges and unraveling threads, the viewer may recognize personal circumstances of life.

Knot Perfect (2012)

The first of this series, “Knot Perfect” reveals the struggle to reconnect. Past paradigms serve to paralyze us in the present but it is in the present that healing takes place and we (re)learn how to walk toward new paradigms as we step into the future.

Faith To Rise (2012)

In a physical rehabilitation process, one may have to learn to sit up, stand, and walk again. Moving from hospital bed to wheelchair to stair climbing is not just a physical transition, but, a spiritual leap of faith. I believe our ability to return to “normal” is directly proportional to our knowledge of who is there to catch us when we fall.

JoyBlue (2012)

A friend said to me, “It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being whole.” This work represents “states of being” blue. I continually repaint the value and intensity of this hue as I experience life. The knots serve to connect changing dichotomies and remind me - I am only human.

Litmus Test (2017)

This work explores the human condition of reconnecting mind, body, and spirit. Feelings of disconnectedness may occur because of past trauma, separation, or loss. The process of creating this tactile work revealed a new paradigm about reconnecting – it must happen in the present through the apprehension of testing what may offer healing. In the visual texture of the purple, torn canvas strips, and carefully tied knots, the viewer may discover a new paradigm in a personal journey of what it is to immerse oneself in the notion of reconnecting.

Creative Process

When this series began, it was difficult for me to stretch canvas without help, tie bows consistently, or paint while standing. But, I kept going forward, a little while at a time – tearing canvas, mixing the acrylic, applying paint, and most definitely the hardest thing – resting in between. This detail image reveals the imperfections of my journey.
