Statement on Reflections of Venice

While photographing doorways along the canals, I considered the effects of the rising tides of the Adriatic Sea. As architectural masterpieces eroded in seeming despair, restoration efforts ensured hope for continued survival.

Intrigued by the textures and colors of this beautiful city, I reflect on the fact that Venice, in its unique way, personifies our humanity through its inherent fragility and enduring strength.

I invite you, the viewer, to also reflect.

Creative Process

My creative process for this work includes the exploration of technical and traditional methods, which combine digital photography, inkjet printing, and watercolor painting. The photographic image is manipulated within Photoshop software, printed onto watercolor paper, where the colors are then enhanced using watercolor paints.

After taking this photo of Basino Orseolo, it became a demonstration image for the classroom. One purpose included having students learn to use tools in Adobe Photoshop for photo retouching. Simulating this example they remove the broken pipe and insert a window.
